Flowers in the Desert / Flores en el desierto
(José Álvarez, Mexico, 2009, 72 min. In Huichol and Spanish with English subtitles) In Flowers of the Desert, filmmaker José Álvarez documents Huichol daily and ritual life including their traditional peyote pilgrimages to Wirikuta, a Huichol sacred site and pilgrimage destination in the desert of San Luis Potosí, and to the Pacific coast of Nayarit. Yumakwaxa / The Drum Celebration
(Karin Gunn, Mexico, 2008, 8 min. In Wixaritari with English subtitles) Yumakwaxa/The Drum Celebration was produced in an animation workshop for teachers and high school students, many of whom were Wixaritari, in the western state of Jalisco. Claymation brings to life the annual drum celebration, a rite of passage ceremony for the children of the community guided by the Mara’acame (spiritual leader), that involves sharing food and hearing stories about sacred places.
